Every mother eventually comes to the realization that even though her kids are top priority, she still needs some time for herself. While being mom is a part of your identity, it is not the only part of you that matters. ‘Me time’ can help make us better mothers and more pleasant to be around. The truth is, mom’s me time adds a bit of relaxation and helps reduce stress – those precious moments are well-deserved breaks!
When you are less stressed you feel better and you are happier. This allows you to take the best care of your children. After a ‘break’ filled with me time you will feel refreshed and you will be better able to handle all the fun and drama that can come with being a mom.
You may only have 20 minutes to enjoy or you might have a full day or evening – make it a point to take full advantage of the chance to indulge yourself.
How to Spend Me Time
How you spend that time is really up to you. Me time is a very personal thing, however, below you will find some ideas that you may find useful.
Enjoy some music: Whether you like to listen along or hum or sing, music can be an excellent way to relax.
Spend time with a favorite hobby or start a new one: Hobbies can include a wide range of activities; you may like to do cross stitch or paint, or maybe you like to make jewelry or sew – whatever it is, take some time to do it.
Relax with a soak in the tub: Quiet time with a nice hot bath can be soothing to the body and the mind.
Read a good book: Reading can put you in a new place or a different world. It’s a great way to relax.
Call a friend or two: Just having some adult conversation can sometimes provide the break you need.
Take a nap: Many mothers try to get by on little sleep. When you have a chance, why not sneak in a nap?
Watch a movie: Movies are much like books in that they can help you escape from your reality for a break. So prepare your favorite snack and choose a great flick.
Exercise: Working out can actually energize you – plus, it helps keep you in shape. Give it a try when you have the time.
Get in the habit of journaling: Writing can be a great way to relieve stress. You can write about anything you want – you are totally in control of your journal. This bit of empowerment can be a great break from the stresses of life.
Indulge in your favorite food: Although we generally try to eat healthy choices, enjoying a delicious dessert or other treat can feel wonderful.
As mentioned, there isn’t a right or wrong, me time should be personalized to meet your preferences. The ideas above are just suggestions. If you have another me time activity that you would like share we would love to hear about it!
